Vice and others,
My interest in knowing how the Alfonso XII version looks like today is not in deciding which one is better -- I expect that both of them are pretty good anyway. Instead, I'd like to see:
1. how identical they really are -- since presumably the Tandang Ano's intent was to make the Paete version (the "twin") as close as possible to the prize-winning Alfonso XII version.
2. how they have stood up to the passage of time -- e.g., have the respective images' original encarnas been retained, and how have their widely different domiciles affected such preservation?
3. how the Alfonso XII version is dressed today -- and if photos are extant, how it was dressed when it won the international art competition at the Amsterdam Exposition in 1883.
These are some of the questions raised by members of Hermandad de la Sagrada Pasion de Jesus, an organization recognized by the Vatican, who attended the "Encuentro" Celebration in Paete last March.
Salamat po! |

Yamak,
Thank you for clarifying your concerns. Will include them on my research.
_________________ Rojilyn "Mutuk" Quiachon Bagabaldo |

Vice,
ako uli, took a while to get the answer from NHI kasi sira yung download section ng website nila sinumbong ko kay Prof. Ambeth
this is the one on their file on our kababayan:
MARIANO MADRIÑAN
(1858-1939)
Noted Religious Sculptor
Known for his realistic and detailed wood carvings, Mariano Madriñan hailed from
Paete, Laguna. At the time of his birth on September 26, 1858, the town was already famous for
its woodcarving industry.
At an early age, he was exposed to various sculptors making mostly religious images for
churches and private homes. Before he was 10, he himself displayed remarkable talent in the
craft. He improved his skills as a sculptor when he trained with Bonifacio Arevalo.
Arevalo (1850-1920), Madriñan’s contemporary was a prominent resident of Quiapo,
Manila. A dentist by profession, he was also a superb carver who supplied religious images to
various churches. Arevalo was known for works such as the ones depicting the Immaculate
Conception (La Purisima Concepcion) and Saint Raphael. He was also a patron of the arts,
having sponsored fellow sculptors and painters and supported a musical band which bore his
name. His generous assistance to Madriñan as a mentor and friend helped his colleague pursue
his calling as a sculptor.
In 1883, Madriñan sent one of his works, a Mater Dolorosa image, a sorrowful depiction
of the Virgin Mary after the crucifixion and burial of Christ, to the universal exposition in
Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. The image won popular acclaim and earned for him a plaque of
recognition from King Alfonso of Spain.
Later, his friend Arevalo presented his own work, El Cristo de Velasquez (The Christ of
Velasquez) at the Exposicion Regional de Filipinas in 1895. A three-dimensional interpretation
of Velasquez’s painting, it won for Arevalo a gold medal.
In his later years, Madriñan continued making religious images and sculptures which
were praised for their detailed and life-like presentation.
He died on January 7, 1939.

below is the reply i got from NHI's Ambeth Ocampo. Seems the 1882 is a typographical error plus the claim on the medal of honor which is different from a gold medal. the book by Cornelio Africano, however, has an account on what happened to the medal.
I found a replica of the gold medal in the exposition on eBay here if you want to buy one
it's sad that the event, the medal and the original mater was not well-documented. wala pa kasi masyado paparazzi that time. all the links i have about the exposition are in french or german and online translation need lots of improvement
probably the original is stashed away in a castle or museum in Spain
note also that the exposition focused on the colonies and trade that's why entries from the Philippines, a Spanish colony, were exhibited.
problem with the research is that we're now having more questions than answers

22 October 2008
Greetings from the National Historical Institute!
This is to acknowledge the receipt of your e-mail dated 8 October 2008 requesting information on Mariano Madriñan's Mater Dolorosa.
Initial research revealed that after he won a gold medal in the Amsterdam Exposition in 1882 for his Mater Dolorosa (Sorrowful mother), King Alfonso XII of Spain awarded him a medal of honor and diploma. According to the book, Paete Bayang Masining, Bayang Pinoy by Cornelio T. Africano, Madriñan received the diploma while the medal was confiscated by the captain of the town before it could reach him. He never received the medal because he came from a colonized country and he was an indio. Later, he burned the diploma that he kept for quite some time in order not to remember the insult he experienced.
Further, it was not clear what had happened to the original statue that won the award. It was reported that it was given as a gift to the Spanish royal family, as was the practice during that time.
Sincerely,
AMBETH R. OCAMPO

Maraming salamat Vice Mutuk and Botits for the replies. Enlightening informations indeed, though we created more questions than answers, its always good to have "something" than nothing
Vice, would you consider holding an exhibit of all the great pieces made by Tandang Ano in the future?
Botits, I bought a "replica" of that medal... Siguro maganda mayroon tayo kahit yun lang
Regards to you both.

LIWANAG NA WALANG KATAPUSAN
Parokya ng San Santiago Apostol
Paete, Laguna
