To Mr. Administrator:

There is a sentence towards the end of the opening window of USAP PAETE that reads: "This data is based on . . ." Could you please revise this to read instead as: "These data are based on . . ." because the word "data" is the plural form of "datum." Thank you.

Dear King Arthur,
Many years ago, when you took your typing course at ELI with your friends from MFHS, you checked me on my pronunciation of a word I have forgotten. Now, checking a sentence because of a very simple error shows you are really the king. King of what? Sorry to say being a ruler of a state school, does not mean you know everything. Why not be humble instead?

English is an evolving language, and according to the Wall Street Journal:

"Most style guides and dictionaries have come to accept the use of the noun data with either singular or plural verbs, and we hereby join the majority.

As usage has evolved from the word’s origin as the Latin plural of datum, singular verbs now are often used to refer to collections of information: Little data is available to support the conclusions.

Otherwise, generally continue to use the plural: Data are still being collected."

The instance in this forum you are citing uses "data" as a collection of information, thus, this is in line with the singular use, which is now accepted. By the way, since that part of the forum came with a modification of the code, the administrator of this forum was not the one who composed that sentence.

You are not going to get away easily, but you can start apologizing to the US Navy retiree's who you called maggots. They have served faithfully and helped our townmates to get a better life here in USA, baka naman hindi ka nakapasa noon kaya galit ka sa kanila, si Mr.Baccay lang ang nagturo sa amin sa ELI ng inglis and we got by. You can claim senility as a poor excuse to help you..In the Navy and Coast Guard, when they say stand by for heavy roll, better brace yourself King Arthur/guest/ghostrider, you are stepping on too many toes and may not able to get out. I am done with you..
