Beautiful pictures. They are definitely a far cry from the images of New Orleans flooding our TV screens.

Where there is charity and love, there is God.

Many thanks to all who help. We are all especially indebted to Mr. Chris Pasia, the chef who took our beloved Paetenians out of harm's way in New Orleans. We hope and pray that you and your family likewise recover from your losses. We continue to pray for those who were left behind, most especially, the landlord of the Bagalso family, who chose to stay behind.

Thanks, dada Ludy, we will check out the links that you gave today and see how we could get assistance from the US government.

I just checked the site (I think they have everything they need to complete an application) - I will request them to apply online today after they have breakfast - they are all asleep right now.

Musta na Angel? Nice to see your picture with Marlon Brando este... Kang Charlie "Supremo" Baldemor pala. I used to be one of those silent readers of this forum. I have been a silent reader since year 2000. But as per your advice, I will now actively participate here. Bilang panimula nais kong malaman mo na ang opisina ng PAETEM ay naka DSL na at maaari ding magamit ng ating mga kababayan sa mga biglaang pangangailangan nito. PAETEM so far have two units of computer. Inaasikaso ko na rin na magkaroon ng DSL ang opisina ng Sangguniang Bayan. Hopefully, this month of October ay naka DSL na kami.

Maraming Salamat sa mga tulong at suporta mo sa ating bayan!!! We really have to multiply.

I am guessing that this is either Konsehal Cosico or Pascual. Mabuti naman at sasamahan ninyo kami rito sa Usap Paete.

Update (New Orleans Paetenians);

(a) We have succeeded last night in finishing an application for assistance from FEMA for the Bagalso family. I will try to do the same thing for Topher today.
(b) They are slowly recovering from lack of sleep. I think the kids have adjusted in our home.
(c) Topher and Bong will be accompanied by Eric Baisas today to Marriott in DC, so that they could start their jobs there.
(d) Dedette Villanueva will assist the Bagalso family in finding a new school for their kids.
(e) We will try to open a bank account today for the Bagalso family.
(f) Tamen Pielago will help in finding an apartment for the Bagalso family. Pielago's family are the ones hosting Topher at the moment and Topher will probably stay with them.

***********************

Please do not forget in your prayers the people they left behind in New Orleans. In addition, please continue praying for Chef Chris Pasia and his family. It is important to keep in mind that we, Paetenians, would not have been able to extend help to Bong and Topher if Chef Pasia did not help them escape New Orleans. We owe a lot to Chef Pasia.

I haven't posted much lately but I keep on reading the exchanges of our kababayans and friends here at Usap-Paete. And if I don't read, Ver updates me especially of important new development like the rescue of our kababayans in New Orleans.

I love this website because it has helped me make new friends that in normal circumstances won't happen. As the weather starts to get colder, I am reminded of the beautiful, warm California weather. The pictures are a great help. I just have to go back to them to remember the time we spent in California.

I hope and pray that your sister would recover quickly and that your stay in the Philippines would be enjoyable. When I hear news of people having health problems, the more I appreciate my health. Take care yourself.

We were able to secure an apartment for the Bagalso family this morning. They will be living in a 2 bedroom apartment (which will be available this weekend) in the same community (Magnolia Gardens) as Tamen's family. They will be neighbors. The apartment is in front of the bus stop for the school buses going to Carlin Springs Elementary School where Bernadette Bagalso has been enrolled.

As I mentioned, we succeeded in enrolling the Bagalso children into Arlington schools as the Arlington superintendent issued a memo to all schools asking them to waive all requirements for victims of hurricane Katrina. That was a big help. The kids did take placement exams and they both passed so Bernard will start middle school in Kenmore while Bernadette will be in grade 2 in Carlin Springs Elementary School. Kenmore Middle school, by the way, is now housed in a brand new building.

Bong Bagalso and Topher Cagandahan will start at JW Marriott in DC tomorrow - they are scheduled to work at 11:am to 7 pm tomorrow in one of its restaurants.

I also took Nieves to Arlington County offices where I had a social worker assigned to her case. The social worker was very helpful and he had immediately turned in an urgent request to the Furniture Bank of America to avail of household items (kitchen, dining, living and bedding room furnishings). He also provided us with a contact person at the American Red Cross (Arlington Chapter), which we will visit this coming Thursday. He also helped us in preparing a request for living cost assistance (rent allowance, food stamps) from Arlington County. He did talk with Nieves and it was apparent that everytime Nieves had to describe their ordeal in New Orleans, she would start to cry. I see the scripts that some people have written in Usap and in the mailing list. It is missing the real sad and traumatic events inside New Orleans. We still have not heard from the fellow Filipinos left behind in New Orleans. And right now, I feel that Nieves would rather not return to the story of New Orleans.

My mother-in-law has obtained clothing for the kids as she works in a charitable daycare organization. We continue to receive donations from Paetenians (Gloria Basa Caguin - THANK YOU very much!). I have not been at Georgetown University, but I will be there tomorrow after I dropped off the Bagalso family in the schools in Arlington.

Tamen took care of Bienn the entire day as Nieves, Dedette and I were working around the county offices. Eric Baisas took Topher and Bong to Marriott where they met Mr. Rivera, the manager and recruiter at Marriott. Stong helped in getting the New Orleans Paetenians their own bank accounts, and he also had to meet Alona and Lito, who just arrived at Dulles from Paete. Bienn really enjoyed the yema from Paete while all of us feasted on Tamen's tinolang manok.

The Bagalsos are currently enjoying another dinner with my mother-in-law and Mary. They still need a lot of sleep to recover fully and we all have to wake up early for school tomorrow. We need to drop off Bienn in Tamen's house and we need to be in the schools before 7:20 am.

P.S. I just finished Christopher's FEMA application so we now have both applications in.

Dear Kang Tita Acac and Kang Cora Malinis; I received today the assistance you sent for the Bagalso family. As I mentioned earlier, Bong and Nieves would like to share all of the donations with Christopher. Your help is greatly appreciated. So far, we have received from Mady and Mody Rivera, and Gloria Basa Caguin. On behalf of the New Orleans Paetenians, thank you very much.

We just watched the clip from TV patrol showing Paete and the photos
of our relatives from New Orleans.

Bernie and Bernadeth went to school and the school has informed us
that the couple need to be seen by professionals tomorrow in school
(They need to update the immunization of their children and the
school is worried that they may be sufferring from some emotional
trauma. I will bring the family to school tomorrow morning.

Today was a successful day - Bong, Nieves, Bienn and I went to the
American Red Cross. They received $1565 from the Red Cross. We had
lunch in Little Quiapo and Bong had "dinuguan" for the first time in
the US. We also had "lechon kawali", "sinigang baboy" and "buko
juice". Then we went to the Arlington county offices - to set up
some long term assistance. We met initially with an eligibility
screener. We have another appointment on Tuesday morning and Bong
will so be applying for a housing grant from Arlington county to help
pay their monthly rent. Our FEMA application is still pending.

Bernie managed to get home safely from school so we no longer have to
worry about how he would go and get out of school once the family has
transferred to their new home in Arlington. We will have dinner
tonight in Tamen's place before heading back to Annandale.

Dear Kang Tita Acac:

Your're right. Suddenly three branches of the Cagandahan family are now in the DC area - I am just one generation older than the other two.

Topher did talk with me last night regarding your conversation. The Bagalsos are definitely staying for good in our area. Topher is still looking at his options, but he feels very much at home with his peers here in the DC area.

God bless the Cagandahans!
