from FB wall of Joven Cajipe:

Dear Bro. Joven Cajipe,

Greetings from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines!

This is in reference to your email dated June 16, 2011 requesting for help in the preservation of some of the oldest and largest fresco paintings found in the St. James the Apostle Parish Church.

We wish to inform you that we are pleased to provide technical assistance on this matter as we are committed to promote the protection of our material heritage.

The NHCP technical team plans to visit the Paete Church and assess the actual condition of the paintings in the morning of June 30, 2011 and hopefully, we would be able to come up with urgent measures to protect their existence acceptable to all concern.

Looking forward to meet you and Fr. Joseph dela Rosa for this undertaking. Our warmest regards.

Sincerely,
Engr. Larry C. Cruz
OIC, Materials Research Conservation Division

Ate Lee has done a very good job in the facebook and web for the Sagip.Joven Cajipe is spearheading the fund collection to restore and save the Cristobal for posterity. For such a project , have you estimated how much it will cost ? What expert did the estimate? Who will be restoring the painting. there maybe more questions later on but providing the Paetenians answers to these questions, will be a good start.

Sabi ni Onyx Sunga:
Onyx Sunga changed the group description to "Ang Proyekto po ay naglalayong palaganapin ang kaalaman tungkol sa kasalukuyang kalagayan ng San Cristobal Painting.

UPANG MAKATULONG, I-ADD PO NATIN SA GROUP LAHAT NG ATING KAKILALA, KAIBIGAN AT KAMAG-ANAK. LALUNG-LALO NA ANG MGA TAGA-PAETE. "

Sagip Cristobal Document
Current Bracketing System for tokens:

Token: mugs at tumbler

Modifications/Suggestions:

Alisin na ung Category 1 and 2. Magbenta na lang tayo ng keychains, postcards, mugs, and other items.

Yung Category 3 imomodify: Parang the 20$ Club Concept nung sa Poten. Benefactors would be asked to donate 3000 pesos or its foreign currency equivalent. The idea ay pag maraming benefactors, lalaki din yung pera in the end. Tapos, the first benefactor kasi donated approximately 3000 pesos.

Category 5: Replica -> Need to identify people na willing gumastos for replicas.

Doc Tabia Adefuin commented on my wall:
Ate Lee, You are doing a good job making everyone aware of the Sagip San Cristobal. Picuters are very important, a picture is worth a thousand words.Do Joven and the group have any estimate of how much it will cost to restore the picture? ...Who will restore the picture? With poor US Economy,( Canada Dollar is now worth more than the US dollar), people are weary of opening their pocket book without definitive end point. Tab

Lee replied:
Tabs, thank you. these kids are to be commended and i am doing my best to assist them. joven and the others are meeting this Saturday.. so we will get more latest info from their walls. of course right now they are very busy with the coming Fiesta ng San Santiago Apostol... but i will go all out and more globally on this project's promotion to help the kids efforts in fund raising.. i have no money so this is the least i could dofor the worthwhile project!

in August 27 (tentative still) as soon as the kids are ready for the big launching we will know all about the project and hopefully including how much a projected cost of the works required in the murals.. i believe the kids are doing this with KaNoel's guidance and the Church Conservation Heritage of the Philippines where Joven is in contact with.

re the Church Conservation Heritage of the Philippines, here is the link to the FAQ (frequently asked questions):

http://www.ivanhenares.com/200.....on-in.html

Mr. Ivan Henares is Joven's contact person. Ivan has visited about 80 provinces in the Philippines and his advocacy is Heritage Preservation. He is also a member of the International Cultural Tourism Committee and teaches at the Asian Institute of Tourism in UP Diliman. i will post more about him later. here is his photo as one of the 10 City Heroes you should know.
Mr. Ivan Henares of the Church Heritage Conservation of the Philippines. from all Paetenians here at www.paete.org Thank you sir for your support and your help advocating this town project!

i will try and post all pictures, documents, etc as soon asthey have finalized their preparation for the launching in August. the FB group will post everything, ALL INFO on their walls... i hope the kids will get busy taking photos inside and outside the church with their cell phones. God bless Doc and keep watching us here.

Nakapag ocular inspection na po ang National Historical Commission of the Philippines (formerly NHI) sa simbahan this July and ang estimate po nila for the painting would be Php. 1.8 million pesos po para marestore siya.

Smile

2. Pag aaral at Pag susuri sa Pinta (Documentation and Diagnostic)
3. Paglikom ng Pondo para sa Total Restoration
4. Total Restoration

In the church in Paete, Laguna are two works by Josef Luciano Dans (1805- ca. 1870), probably one of the earliest recorded painters in Philippine art history.

thank you also forthe correction re Ivan Henares:

Joel is an aspiring historian in Philippine Catholicism, a heritage conservationist and a professional tour guide who educates people about the importance of promoting and preserving our religious heritage..... eto pa ang sabi niya sa web site niya:
I travel a lot — exploring off the beaten paths, discovering the unknown treasures and immersing myself into the towns and villages. I write about these experiences here in my blog. I also run a tour business, specializing on group tours for schools and private companies, providing them with exciting, enriching and enlightening travel experiences with unconventional encounters on local culture, heritage, food, traditions and rituals.

I’m also a proud member of Heritage Conservation Society and the Brown Movement for Cultural Advancement. I also work as consultant on heritage restoration and preservation, such as the San Cristobal Murals Preservation Project in Paete, Laguna, and a few other similar projects around the country. I’ve started as well to contribute magazine articles with special interest in architecture and industrial design.

I’m also an IT professional, a couchsurfer and a self-professed audiophile (who loves to break guitar strings everytime).

THANK you so much Joel, welcome to Paete!

this is from Ivan Henares "Ivan about Town" blog tours to help and save our heritage:

Viaje Na! Laguna and Quezon (October 9 to 10, 2010)
For the benefit of the Paete Church murals art conservation project
Celebrate South Luzon’s arts, culture, cuisine, nature and history as you trace the charming route of Viaje del Sol: an alliance of soulful establishments that promote sustainable tourism and endorse our unique Filipino culture, heritage and artisanship.

Ever tried eating a lunch of binalot at a raft in the middle of the lake? Or a full Filipino traditional breakfast while enjoying the breathtaking view of the majestic Mt. Banahaw? Curious about Ugu Bigyan’s secret recipe of his famous kulawo? How about a delectable set of exotic Paeteño dishes, or a 4-course dinner of the best gourmet food around? You’ll be in for a gastronomical encounter with the most sumptuous cuisine that will surely make you beg for more!

We will be visiting the best-kept secrets of Laguna and Quezon as we catch the sunlight running thru charming country inns, off-the-beaten path cafes, and inspiring art studios. Also included in the tour are the most historical Spanish-era churches that have shaped the country’s soul and spirit for centuries.

Tour package is Php5,500 per person. There are only 12 slots available.

PostPosted: Wed Jul 27, 2011 5:21 pm    Post subject: The State of the Art in Paete..by d transcendental traveller Reply with quote

here is an excerpt from my friend, The Transcendental Traveler:

"But our raison d’etre for visiting the town were the murals at Paete’s St. James the Apostle Church. All four masterpieces have been dated to the mid-19th century and attributed to one local artist, Jose Luciano Dans. They are all in various states of deterioration. Three of these are near the main portal, the fourth is nearer the altar (and is the least damaged). Two paintings are twins, depicting the same subject: St. Christopher (San Cristobal) – curiously not the saint the church was named after.

"I’m not familiar with the Catholic canon of saints, but St. Christopher doesn’t seem to be one of those superstar saints. His history is largely obscure. Legend has it that he went on a quest for the most powerful ruler. He served a king who shuddered at the mere mention of the devil. Fail. The devil betrayed his cowardice by trembling at the sight of the cross. Epic fail. This led him to search for Christ, the fearsome, not fearful, King of kings. As an act of Christian service, he put his heft and height to good use by carrying people on his back across a turbulent river. He became a human bridge and converted people to Christianity until his decapitation for proselytizing in what is now Turkey.

"The legend served as the inspiration for two of these murals. Both depict St. Christopher fording a stream with the Christ Child perched on his shoulder. The first one, nearest the main portal, is the original mural. It’s in better shape though because it had been concealed under the newer one for decades, consequently protected from the elements.

"The original mural is a fresco – a painting on a stone wall and plaster. Some parts had chipped away, marred by awkward attempts at smoothening out the pockmarks. The newer mural was painted on a wooden (molave) panel, which by now has deeply-grooved cracks and gaping holes, especially at the lower periphery"

may magandang balita na received na po ng NCCA ang inquiries natin regarding sa san kristobal painting after several months month of may pa po ako nag email sa kanila kasabay ng email ko sa National Historical Commission... tumawag sa akin ang NCCA ngayun lang bibisita sila sa church to visit the painting for assessment and documentations. schedule daw next wk depende sa availability ng conservators. need nating i prepare ang scafolding daw...

yung NHC under Engnr.
