It is very unfortunate nowadays, that religion is mistakenly associated with "Dark Ages", the period when humanity experience the lowest point of self discovery and exploration.
Yes it is true, that during that time, people are religious and so today in the modern day Philippines, that probably, in one way or another hampered its moving forward.
But it would be a great disservice to our national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal to completely blame this condition on religion alone. And here is why;
Dr. J.P. Rizal, exemplified, what true and genuine religion is all about, it is not a ritual and traditions that Spaniard utilize in a very subtle way to manipulate its hold on population, a tool for colonial gain.
Dr. Rizal's religion is not a skin deep practices, but a way of life.
He studied well, and spend his entire life on a very productive occupation, showing compassion to those who are in need, used his God-given talents for the common good. Promoted sports so that young and adolescent would not be hooked on drugs and wasteful vices. He lived unblemished life, and he died fighting for it.
Philippine religion most probably is a hypocrisy, for in the outside, they show a form of godliness, but practices the most despised kind of oligarchy, denying fair chance to those who are marginalized. not only of those who are in power but even the citizen rank, rampant corruption is the trend.
The ideal scenario is this; let those who have passion for science and discovery be what they are. Spend time on exploration, discovery, search for wisdom and knowledge. Let those religious leaders live the life of example that no one could blame god for their questionable practices.
Science and religion can exist harmoniously interconnected and complimentary with each other.
There are list of scientist who have excelled in their field and also did not completely shut down their religious belief and among them are;
Sir Isaac Newton, who explored on science of light and optics, among many scientific field of study, Albert Einstein, a Jew who
explored on study of heavenly bodies, known as Astronomy, and the one who discovered the formula for atomic energy know as;
E=mc2
It would be a complete package, that a person can spend his time on knowledge search, utilize and share it, so that even the poor and marginalized could lead a descent life, live his life in such a way that there is no trace of corruption in it, recognizing that his ability is not of him alone, but comes from being higher up above, and so therefore, accountable for how he uses it.
It would be nice if Philippines could produce such leader, not only as a rational thinking figure, but also a man of conviction that he is wiling to say "No" to corruption, "No" to bribery, that will compromise his leadership. And yes to "Faith" that even in trying times, he can lead the population to weather the socio-economics storms that are so rampant in this present age.
But for now, it is just a wishful thinking. |

i don't understand how religion and science can exist harmoniously... religion are based on faith, which requires no evidence, and science are based on thorough investigation and facts... |

In my philosophy classes at the graduate school, I always argue that religion is a "social construct" that is based on authority (e.g., the authority of the pope) or agreement (e.g., agreement on what is written in a book, such as the bible, or the agreement of the members of a cult or a "religious" organization, such as Scientology or Islam). On the other hand, science is based on empirical evidence or what we call "facts," such as evidence from observation, experimentation and scientific studies. Thus, we say "I believe" when we profess a "religious" dogma (such as the Apostle's Creed) and we say "I know" when we declare a "scientific" truth (such as the law of gravity). And that's exactly the reason why most people say that religion and science are irreconcilable. |
