STO. TOMAS, Davao del Norte, Nov. 6 (PIA) -- Newly promoted Brig. Gen. Lysander Suerte of the 1003rd Infantry “Raptor” Brigade recently turned over his post to Col. Buenaventura Pascual with high hopes that socio-civic initiatives would be sustained.

Speaking during the turning over ceremony held on Oct. 31 at the 1003rd Infantry Brigade Headquarters in Brgy New Visayas, Sto Tomas, Suerte echoed the assurance of Provincial Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario that the provincial government will continue hauling services to barangays through the Convergence for Peace and Development.

The Convergence for Peace and Development known as the Convergence, was born during the 1003rd IB stint of Suerte with whom del Rosario planned the idea early last year, to pool together the resources of Peace and Development Outreach Program (PDOP) of the Philippine Army and the PEOPLE Development Agenda of the provincial government.

“Sabi ni Governor ay kanyang ipagpatuloy ang Convergence,” he told the audience among whom were top officials of the 10th Infantry “Agila” Division of the Philippine Army, local government officials, and civic leaders.

Suerte talked long about memories created along the course of rolling out the Convergence to far-flung and depressed barangays together with Provincial government officials spearheaded by del Rosario who made it sure that key provincial government offices brought their services at the grassroots level.

He asked the incoming 1003rd commander to take advantage of and continue the established alliances with civilian groups and with government agencies to carry on the agenda of winning grassroots people to take side with the government.

Suerte held his post as the commanding officer of 1003rd IB for 23 months. He will be taking a new position as the assistant commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division.

In his reply, Pascual assured to continue the civil military initiatives left behind by Suerte, taking stock of his experience as former Civil Military Operations officer and former commander former commander of Task Force Zamboanga.

In installing Pascual into office as one of his key field commanders, 10th Infantry “Agila” Division commander Major Gen. Ariel Bernardo cited character and attitude as key factors of ensuring success in leading the army troops.

He challenged Pascual to aim for exemplary performance capped with right focus which he said is built on environmental awareness, agenda, right attitude, action, and accomplishment with evaluation.

Bernardo expected Pascual to exhibit a sense of urgency with clearly defined set of goals, to be willing to “go an extra mile” and to strive for excellence.

In a separate interview, Bernardo explained that his call for character and right attitude integrated in leadership role of army commanders, is essential in carrying out the Internal Peace and Security Program (IPSP) aimed at addressing internal threats.

“Our combat competence is good for external threat . We are service provider, kelangang disiplinado,” he said. (JMDA/RGA/PIA XI)
