IN MEMORIAM

PURING AFURONG

We mourn the loss of one of Northeast Chapter’s pioneer officers – Purificacion “Puring” Afurong. She died on December 2, 2014 at the age of 93, just a couple of months short of her 94th birthday. When the Paetenians U.S.A. (NE Chapter) was on its infancy stage, Inang Puring was one of the energetic and active officers who worked along with the founder Dr. Roger Baisas and the others like Ted Madrinan, Johnny Fadul, Tony Madrinan, Doc Tabia Adefuin, Abun Tolentino and his wife Lori Madridejos-Tolentino.

A housewife all her life, she carefully raised her six children to be good and morally straight individuals. Before migrating to America, they lived a comfortable life in Paete from her husband Casiano’s successful occupation – carving and constructing designer furniture with elaborate designs. For his expertise, he was awarded by the Gawad Sikap Committee on Paete’s 400 years foundation with the title – “Gawad Talon sa Katangi-tanging nagawa sa larangan ng handicraft”. Meanwhile, though Inang Puring, was busy rearing her growing children, she was also an active member of the Women’s Club in Paete and was Treasurer of the Puericulture Center for 8 years.

Amang Casi Afurong retired from his successful occupation and let his son Felimon take over. Then the other members of the family migrated to America in the 1970s. When Edith bought a house in Brooklyn the whole family stayed together to fulfill their immigrants dream of living a comfortable life in the U.S.

Inang Puring’s involvement in the Paetenians association gave her an outlet of her boundless energy and her inherent warm friendship. When the younger group of officers joined the association, she became the constant companion and friends of Letty Madridejos and Carmen “Miami” Saavedra. Their closeness earned the trio the title of “Tatlong Maria” and “The Golden Girls” as in the famous TV Series and movie. They traveled together to Europe and other faraway places. In their tours, Inang Puring’s energy and stamina (they called it “liksi”) made her lead the group in walking while carrying the tour flag.

In recognition for Inang Puring’s unselfish and sincere dedication to the Association while raising up her beautiful and successful children, the Northeast Chapter awarded her the plaque as the first “Natatanging Ina of the Northeast” (Special Mother of the Northeast). Though hampered by advanced age she found enjoyment in visiting her hometown Paete every now and then. She was thrilled when in 2013, just past her 92nd birthday, she was a given a plane fare ticket to visit Paete again. Nobody knew though that it will be her last visit to hometown Paete. Nevertheless, she will be comforted that her final journey to Paete will be to rest among many of the people she knew in town, including relatives and friends who already went earlier to the great beyond.

Every Paetenian in the Northeast, and perhaps many of those in other places in U.S. and Philippines would miss Inang Puring’s friendly smiles, laughter and gracious manners. We pray for the eternal repose of her soul.#
