Takaan exhibit carves up Berkowitz Gallery
Jessica Carreras
Issue date: 1/23/07 Section: News

For collectors Dan Davis and K.C. Vansen of Ferndale, love for Takaan (Ta-ka-AAN) - a type of wood statues from the Philippines - came quickly and unexpectedly from an antique store in Ohio. They said they loved the art right away and, from that very store, they bought their first piece: a headless wooden angel standing about three feet high.

Now, that angel, along with other pieces from Davis and Vansen's collection, is on display in the University of Michigan-Dearborn's Alfred Berkowitz Gallery, located on the third floor of the school's Mardigian Library. The men are just two of many collectors whose Takaan is on display in the gallery, which opened to the public last Friday night.

Takaan comes from a 400- year-old tradition in the city of Paete, located in the Philippines. The wooden pieces were carved mainly from mango wood and were used to make papier-mch pieces out of them to be used as toys by children, as well as other things. Over the years, the popularity of the pieces grew and they began to be collected as art. Currently, orders for Takaan come into the Philippines from all over the world.
