Dear Ka Noel;

Nieves asked me today why we are doing these. My response was: I see in her children the future. I know that they in the future may be able to give back to Paete. We, in the DC chapter, share so many dreams for Paete and we know that we may not be able to fulfill all of them. We could only hope that our next generation will continue our efforts and make our dreams come true. God bless.

(This account is authorized by Nieves and Bernard Bagalso. This is
a second-hand report so it may be incomplete and there may be
errors.)

28 August, Sunday - The Bagalso family and Christopher Cagandahan
went to Marriott hotel in downtown New Orleans to seek refuge as the
hurricane Katrina approaches from the Gulf. Marriott advised them
to seek help from one of their former chefs who runs a restaurant in
the lower level of Barron's hotel. The chef's name is Chris
Pasia and he runs a restaurant called StreetCar Bistro, where the
Bagalso couple and Christopher are also employed part-time. The
Paetenians of New Orleans stayed inside the restaurant while Katrina
made a landfall east of New Orleans.

29 August, Monday - Katrina hits land. The Paetenians were safe
inside the StreetCar Bistro.

30 August, Tuesday - The levees that protect New Orleans are
broken. By 4 in the morning, the Bistro was already flooded.
Bernard Bagalso and Christopher Cagandahan, however, continued to
cook for some of the victims of the hurricane, who were waiting
outside the restaurant. The supply inside the restaurant was
limited, there was no water, no electricity - so the two had to cook
with kerosene lamps and with their feet underwater. In the evening,
Antonia Bagalso from Paete posted a message on the mailing list
saying that she has not heard from the Paetenians of New Orleans.
The mayor of Paete, Emmanuel Cadayona, also expressed concern for
the Paetenians in New Orleans in a posting that evening.

31 August, Wednesday - Angel de Dios at Georgetown University read
the postings of Antonia and Mayor Cadayona, he then checked what was
going on in New Orleans and found that the situation is getting
worse. He then called Tamen Pielago of Arlington, Virginia,
informing her that the DC chapter needs to move fast to help the
Paetenians in New Orleans. The Paetenians of Marriott, DC tried to
contact the Marriott hotels in New Orleans. Aurelia "Baby" Pascual
was also informed through the internet postings and she stayed in
contact with Tamen. Food is running out in the StreetCar Bistro as
they no longer have fuel for cooking. They have also started using
milk for water, which caused problems for the lactose-intolerant
Filipinos. Angel went to Georgetown Marriott for assistance, but
they likewise have no contact with New Orleans. Angel called Key
Bridge Marriott and he was instructed to a website of the hotel
chain where he may be able to find help. Angel got a phone number
for relatives of guest or staff that may be trapped inside the
Marriott hotels of New Orleans. He left the names Bagalso and
Cagandahan so that they would start looking for information
regarding their status. In the afternoon, a posting in "Usap" from
Sheba Aseoche-Allenbach appeared giving details of possible contact
persons in Texas that may be able to help. At about 10 pm, Angel
receives a call from Marriott saying that the Paetenians of New
Orleans have managed to get out of New Orleans and they are on their
way either to Baton Rouge or Houston. Since the restaurant is out
of food and the crowd outside the restaurant were starting to become
rowdy, Chef Chris Pasia decided to leave New Orleans that Wednesday
evening. They still had some uncooked food left which they can
bring with them. Bernard and Christopher carried these items
through the dark stairs of the hotel to the uppermost level where
Pasia's SUV is parked. The other problem that they had was
gasoline. Bernard learned that newer models of cars allow fuel only
to enter the tank - this he discovered after inhaling some gasoline
from parked cars and not successfully drawing any into his
container. They were with another family which included a physician
and they were in two vehicles. They did manage to get some gasoline
from some of the parked cars after several tries. They had to push
the SUVs through 3-4 feet of water and miraculously, the vehicles
still started after they reached dry land. They drove to Houston
for seven hours.

1 September - Angel receives a message from Antonia saying that
Christopher's cell phone is now ringing. He tried calling the
number and left a message on his answering machine. The Paetenians
of New Orleans with Chef Chris Pasia arrived in Houston at about 3
am. Chris was able to get a couple of rooms from La Quinta Inn,
where they stayed through Thursday noon. In the inn, Nieves was
able to post a message in Usap, where she left Chris' cellphone
number. Angel calls Chris and then he spoke with Nieves. Angel
calls Tamen, asking her to get plane tickets to fly the Paetenians
from Houston to the DC area. Since there are several Paetenians
already working in Marriott in the DC area, it would be easy for the
New Orleans Paetenians to start a new life in Virginia.
Aurelia "Baby" Pascual offerred to take care of the flight
expenses. Angel talks with Chris Pasia and convinces him that the
Paetenians in the DC area will be able to take care of the Bagalso
family and Christopher Cagandahan. Tamen, who was in Baltimore at
this time, got Ermie Fadul and Millicent Villamayor to help in
getting the plane tickets. The tickets for the flights that
afternoon were very expensive. With several phone conversations
between Baltimore, New Jersey, Georgetown and Houston, it was agreed
that the Paetenians of New Orleans may have to find a place to stay
for one more night in Houston. There was also difficulty in finding
transportation to the airport. Angel calls Nestor Baldemor.
Unfortunately, he is scheduled to leave for Las Vegas the following
morning but he promised to find help. A friend of Chef Chris Pasia,
Frederick Manuel of Houston offerred to house the Bagalso family and
Christopher Cagandahan until they are ready to leave for the DC
area. In the evening, Ermie calls Angel saying that they have
acquired tickets for a Friday evening flight to Baltimore-Washington
International (BWI) airport.

2 September - Din Cagandahan visited the Paetenians of New Orleans
and so did Tina Rivera Manuel. The Paetenians of New Orleans
boarded a flight at 7 pm. They were scheduled to arrive at BWI at
about midnight. Ermie Fadul met them at the airport and they stayed
in his residence for the evening.

3 September - The Paetenians of New Orleans were welcomed by the DC
Chapter paetenians in Mody and Mady Rivera's residence in Prince
Frederick, Maryland. Since the Bagalso family still had belongings
in Baltimore, they stayed one more night in the Fadul's residence.
Christopher Cagandahan was brought to Tamen Pielago's residence in
Arlington, Virginia.

4 September - The Paetenians of New Orleans heard their first mass
in Virginia at the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Falls
Church, Virginia. They were brought to Angel's residence in
Annandale, Virginia. A webcam session was organized so that the
people of Paete would be able to see and hear the Paetenian evacuees
from New Orleans. The Bagalso family is currently staying with
Angel, Mary and Alice of Annandale, Virginia, while Christopher
Cagandahan is staying with Tamen and Aniel Pielago in Arlington.

10 September - The Bagalso has moved to their new home in Arlington, VA. The three kids are now enrolled in school: Bernie (Kenmore), Bernadeth and Bienn (Campbell).

The Bagalso family are still with us and I live in VA. The address I placed in this forum (Georgetown University) will still work and your help will reach them, however, please do not send packages to that address.

Hi Juliet, good to see here. Have you been a silent reader all this time? Say hello to your Mom and Dad. Still work at Duane Reade?

Hi,Tito Ver! No, I just found out about this website from all the news about Katrina so I've been on a couple of times already. Very interesting since I've been in Fla. for the past 2 yrs, not much news down here. It's good to keep up-to-date. Had to get out of NYC & the rat race was taking a toll on me. But everything's going well down here & my parents come to visit often since they're both retired. Regards to Tita Minda, Kevin & Hillary---Juliet

Walang ano man, Neth!

Juliet, I am happy to hear from you. This website is really great. It is the best and most efficient way to keep in touch with our folks. Where in Florida are you? I gave your regards to Tita Minda. I don't think Kevin and Hillary remember you. I saw Tito Rogel a couple of weeks ago when we entertained some guests from California. Haven't seen you Mom and Dad lately, even during the last town fiesta. How is Tina doing?

Keep in touch, Juliet! Now, you know where to go.

Let me introduce you to the rest of the Paetenians. Juliet is the daughter of Nilda Afuang and Roberto Caberto of New York. She is a pharmacist. She used to work with Duane Reade in Midtown Manhattan. Duane Reade is a big drugstore chain.
