Before I went to the US, I had a chance to talk to one
of the fathers of a student in our national high
He told me the total
cost of schooling in first year is Php 900.00. I want
to help him and since his son is my inaanak, I told
myself I will shoulder his schooling on his second
i-advance kaagad yung pera., <lol>] Since then ay

When I was in the US, nakita ko yung ganda ng buhay
doon. You
can afford anything you want. The rich and the poor
eat the same food. And because we have a very
different standard of living, the simplest lifestyle
there is already the most luxurious to the poor and
the marginalized in the Philippines.
To make my long story short, sa America ko nakita na
buong taon nilang pag aaral.

I was almost on the last
leg of my trip when the idea of a “$20 Club” was
conceptualized. At first I was hesitant because I was
not sure how other people would take the idea....[baka
mahaluan ng kung anong kulay!] But my close relatives
were so full of enthusiasm and they suggested we give
it a try. We were only 3 when we started. After only a
week, we have 20 people in our list who are all
enthusiastic to join us. Sabi ko ay OK na yung dalawampung
members para sa dalawampung scholars.
But everybody was so enthusiastic and the
spirit of optimism was very contagious.
We were aiming 100 members until March 2006.
Today [October 8, 2005]
we already have 101 confirmed members in our
PEQMNHS $20 Club.
We have reached our membership target
for 6 months in just 16 days!!!

Two weeks ago, I went home to Paete and took time
interviewing my
cousin Catherine “Kaye” Mesoza Albunag. Kaye is an ECE
graduate but she opted to stay in Paete to teach. She
is a math teacher of our national high school. From
her stories, I was so saddened and so deeply touched.

>>> the tuition fee is Php 485/student/year. Dito
kinukuha ang Php3000.00 na pambayad sa janitor. Some
parents pay only a portion of that amount upon
enrollment [say 100 pesos] and failed to pay the
balance until the end of the school year dahil sa
kakapusan. Wala namang magawa yung mga teachers dahil
wala talaga silang pambayad.

>>> the average number of students in our national
high school is 88 students per class. It should only
There are only 40 chairs with armrest. The other 48
And because there is a shortage of
classrooms, there are 2 class sessions: 6AM – 1PM and
1 PM-8 PM.
By the way, dahil hindi pa gaaanong nagagamit yung
national high school building, classes are held in UP
Barangay Ibaba]

>>> a teacher is receiving a monthly salary of
only Php3600.00 [approximately $64!]. hindi ko lang
alam kung may deductions pa yon. And because they lack
the necessary school supplies, they buy their own
chalk, pentel pens, manila papers, etc. These supplies
are very important because there is also a shortage of
books. The teachers had to write some of the lessons
in manila papers and post then on the walls for the
student’s quick reference.

>>> marami tayong magagaling ng estudyante. Our
national high school was established only 3 years ago
[kaya wala pa tayong 4th year] and yet they have
already won in many competitions.
To solve this problem, the
teachers themselves decided to operate the canteen.
However small the profit they get, the meager amount
is kept in a fund to pay for the transportation of the
competing team in the neighboring towns.

Paete. May isang teacher na taga Sta Cruz who was
offered a better paying job in her hometown but
refused to leave Paete because she learned to love her
students. Kung yung taga Sta Cruz ay nagmamalasakit,
bakit hindi tayong mga taga Paete? Marami daw maatatalinong

To give you an idea from what I know regarding how our
national high school was established, the kindhearted
Quesada sisters [Menchee and Norie] donated a parcel
of lot near our national highway. It was solely for
the purpose of establishing a national high school for
our young Paetenenans. In memory of their parents, the
Quesada sisters requested that the school be named
after them, Poten and Eliseo Quesada. Fortunately, a
budget was granted by the provincial government for
the construction of the building. Hence, the Poten and
Eliseo Quesada Memorial National High School [PEQMNHS]
was born. But unfortunately, walang budget for that
school. The school has only up to third year. To be
included in the budget of the Department of
Education{DepEd] kailangan ay kumpleto up to 4th year.
To solve this problem, 4th year students from Liceo de
Paete and Eastern Laguna College were invited to join
the national high school but the parents of the 3rd
year students opposed the idea. They want their
children to be called the "pioneers" of the PEQMNHS.
Our municipal budget for education is barely enough to
support our 3 elementary schools: PES, QES, IES and
another school in Papatahan. Our town officials were
faced with a great Herculean task of finding ways to
support the PEQMNHS but found none. To pay the meager
salary of the high school teachers, our town mayor, Ka
Noel, had no other choice but to slice a portion of
the elementary school’s budget.

But we won't stop at 101 for there will be more
needy scholars than donors. Please, let us help these
poor but deserving students
by joining the $20 Club. Your $20 in the US is just an
ordinary meal, an ordinary shirt, a few gallons of gas
or just 2 movie tickets. In Paete, your $20 is very
precious. Your $20 will go for 10 school months, more
than enough to send a kid to school and give him a
free PE uniform [jogging pants and t-shirt worth 300
pledge ng Php1120 or the equivalent of $20.
malaking halaga but we only need $20 per donor/member.
If you want to give more, you can donate the same
amount under the name of
another person/persons. That's what some of our
very generous samaritans did.

To those who are interested to join, please email
me at rmcd56@yahoo.com or saida@paete.org so
I can add your name to the PEQMNHS $20 club
members. Or you may send your
$20 donation to the following:

Nemie Baldemor or Gloria Basa Caguin - address to
follow

Our scholarship will start next school year, July
2006. By March we can already determine how many
students will qualify [those with grades 85 and
above, kung marami sila, those with the highest
grades] In the incoming first year students, those who
got the highest grades in the entrance test will be
our scholars. Actually, these are just suggestions from
the members but we will still have to talk to the
teacher/principal in-charge for the mechanics of the
selection process. If you have suggestions,
please let us know.

Maraming maraming salamat po!!!

some people think that using the entire amount of the
$20 club for the scholarship is not practical. there
was a suggestion to keep the whole amount in the bank
and use only the interest to send our scholars to
school. using that strategy, a $4000 bank deposit
[assuming we would reach that amount] would only allow
us to send 7 or 8 scholars for the year 2006. when i
solicited for scholarship fund for the $20 club, it
was with the understanding [i hope] that it will be a
"one-on-one" basis, meaning, "1 donor:1 scholar". i
assume it is on that premise that even babies and
children were enrolled, that there will be a scholar
under their name. for that, i salute the parents, the
lolos and the lolas for their noble effort, wala pang
kamuwang muwang ang mga bata and yet you are already
instilling in their very young minds the value of
charity.

there was another apprehension. for some reasons, the
members today may not be willing and able to donate
another $20 next year and so the sustainability of the
project will be affected. one even feared that the
overwhelming support of the members today may not be
equalled next year kaya ang suggestion ay huwag itodo
yung pera. part of it will be for the scholarship and
the other part will be kept in the bank. true, there
is no strings attached in joining the $20 club. no arm
twisting. walang pilitan, kumbaga. this is voluntary
and the membership is NOT for life so you are not
obliged to give $20 every year. it is for this reason
that some time next year, i will be knocking again at
your doors to ask for another $20 [may inflation o
malaki!SmileSmileSmile] and when you close your door, hindi ako
when you open your door, hindi ako ang pinapapasok
ninyo. by opening your door, you are giving chance and
hope to our underprivileged but deserving students of
paete, our future leaders. so whether you open or
close your doors, the choice is yours. but in the very
sad event that only 5 members would opt to open their
doors next year, we will still be very happy to send
the 5 top 2006 PEQMNHS $20 club scholars in 2007.

by the way, the $20 club has different kinds of
members. merong sumali because they are my friends.
merong sumali because they are my relatives. merong
sumali because they like the concept. some are
combination of the two. some are in the "all of the
above" category. some maybe are not my very close
friends but they joined bec they believe in the
worthiness of the project. merong napilitan lang.
anonymous but i dont know their reason, maybe
they want to remain a "silent supporter". again,
whatever your reason in joining the club, maraming
salamat because you are helping me to help other
people. this club is not mine and it will never be
mine. it is ours!

we are still growing in number but we are not stopping. we need more donors because many children need our support. to those who want to join, please email me at: saida@paete.org or rmcd56@yahoo.com. comments/suggestions are also welcome.

to all the 146 members of the PEQMNHS $20 Club, i wish
to thank you all, very very much....from the bottom of
my heart!!!

MARAMING MARAMING SALAMAT PO SA INYONG LAHAT!!!

I praise and thank God for you for initiating this cause. I have been following this up but couldn't decide if I will include this to the many options we are faced with. Today the message for me was so intense that I decided to get involved in it. Hindi ito dahil sa ano pa mang dahilan, but to help. My only concern is $20 here in Australia is lesser in value compared to US...sabi mo 'bawal magbigay ng mas malaki'. Maybe the equivalent of $20 US is more or less A$30..what doyou think?
Let me know how and when you want me to transfer this amount to you.

hi emma,

thanks for your interest in joining the $20 club, which now has a total members of 163....so you are the 164th member! you can send your $US20 donation [or the peso equivalent] through whatever is the most convenient way to you, either kung may uuwi o isabay mo na lang kung magpapadala ka ng pera sa kamag anak mo sa pilipinas. sa july/06 pa naman ang deadline. it would be impractical kasi to send it through the bank...sayang ang bank charges. and you are right....bawal magbigay ng malaki. if you want to give more, i-reserba mo na lang for next year...SmileSmileSmile

maraming salamat!

Cool Cool Cool

dear Guest,

sa ngayon ay mayroon ng 174 members ang $20 club, meaning, madadagdagan ng 174 scholars ang PEQMNHS sa school year 2006. let us pray that our membership will grow bigger para mas marami tayong matulungan. also, our request for old computers and firnitures from the dept of energy is alraeady in the bag, pero next year na'yon dahil inaayos pa ang pagdi-dispose.

thank you for visiting paete.org. btw, you did not mention if you are a student, a teacher or a parent of a PEQMNHS student. also, wag ka matakot i-post ang pangalan mo.... Wink

hi ar-jahy,

ikaw pala si rene james balandra, jr. kilala kita sa pangalan dahil balita ko ay isa ka sa pinakamagaling sa PEQMNHS. hindi mo naitatanong, bale pamangkin pala kita. second cousin ko ang tatay mo [magkapatid ang mga dada namin kaya ang nanay ko ay dada elang mo ay mag pinsang buo] kaklase ko rin sa high school [SSHS] ang ina mong si racquel at barkada namin si tito iking mo [SLN]. pagbutihin mo sa isang taon para ikaw ang maging unang valedictorian ng PEQMNHS [just like your tita emma when she graduated in SSHS]. may nadagdag tayong isang member kahapon kaya 175 na ang donors ng $20 club. tell your classmates to visit our site more often and to participate in the discussions especially in the science lessons by prof angel de dios. marami kayong matututunan doon.

kumusta na lamang sa inyong lahat dyan, to your mom and dad. merry christmas and a happy new year too!

Lest we forget our children in Paete and reassure them with what they don't have this Christmas, they have our love and our dreams for them and we promise to be doing our best for your precious future!

a Christmas poem for all (Copyright by
Nicholas Gordon)

"No Christmas for my children,
No husband for my bed,
No money for tomorrow,
No place to lay my head,

No tree with mounds of presents,
No ornaments or lights,
No smiles on Christmas morning,
No feast on Christmas night,

No toys to ease the boredom
Of hours before closed doors,
No family celebrations,
No trips to crowded stores,

No fireplace, no Santa,
No games aglow with friends,
No fire but feeble fury
As Christmas slowly ends.

For me I have no pity,
My sorrow stronger proves,
Because for my sweet children
I've nothing but my love."

Batang Paete, don't ever give up your dreams! we will help you make them come true the very best we can. God bless and keep you!

Hello po!!

Question lang po, what if ang nakuhang iskolar ay mga 100 po.

hi ar-jhay,

if you have any suggestions abt the $20 club or kung saan pwedeng gastusin yung sosobrang pera [i think that would be more or less Php 40,000.00] let us know. you may also coordinate with mam mhel or mam kaye.

How are you? I can only contact Auntie Nini.
Kahit late ay bumabati ako (in behalf of my family here in Australia) ng Maligayang Pasko at Manigong Bagong Taon.
God bless,
(Tita Am) Emma
