FEAST OF "KRISTONG HARI"
The feast of Christ the King is celebrated
on the last Sunday of November to mark the end of the liturgical year. Time was when this
was a great feast, with the family of Tandang Zacarias Cajipe leading the celebrations.
Tandang Zacarias Cajipe played the sousaphone in the band. He was a hefty man, whose built
matched that of his instrument. People just thought they were made for each other. Tandang
Zacarias' family owns the statue of Christ the King, an imposing figure of Christ, wearing
a crown and seated on a throne. On one hand Christ held the world, on the other His
scepter.
When I was a child, all the town's men - heads of families - fell into procession and
consecrated their families to the King. It was a sight to behold. Men who hardly went to
Church during the year suddenly stood together to honor their King. One wishes that this
tradition continues.
