Paetenian Personalities
Julian Buhay Afurong

Julian Buhay Afurong was president of Paetenians International, So. Cal Chapter between 1991-93. His administration was able to raise the $2000 the chapter donated to Paete Waterworks Project. At present, he is still an active member and adviser to the chapter.

Born and raised in Paete, he graduated from the PES and ELC. He was one of the first graduates. A working student all the way, he supported himself as a woodcarver at the Industrial Division, Bureau of Prisons in Muntinlupa in 1949. He became a Civil Engineer graduating from the Mapua Institute of Technology in 1953.

In 1955, he was accepted as assistant Civil Engineer at the US Naval Base at Sangley Point, Cavite City, and then in Subic Bay. He became a structural engineer at the Design Division for Officer-in-Charge of Construction, Republic of Vietnam in 1965 in Saigon,Vietnam

By some weird coincidence, he became a Professional Engineer in the State of Pennsylvania as the test was administered by the State to license US Naval Officers and civilian architects and engineers.

The family migrated to the US in 1971 via Guam though their port of entry was California. He was hired as structural engineer and worked in Guam for 12 years. He eventually applied for a job in Mainland US. He got his first job in 1983 as Structural Engineer with the US Navy Public Works Center in San Francisco. In 1984, he was promoted to Supervisory Structural Engineer at the US Marine Corps Air Station at El Toro, Irvine, California. He worked there for the last 13 years.

He has received many letters of appreciation and commendation. He served the Philippine Government a total of 7 years and the US Government, a total of 40 years.

Married to the former Cresencia Barredo since March 1955, they have 4 children. The couple currently live in Mission Viejo, California. They plan to visit Paete once a year. The plan already materialized with their first visit to Paete during Summit ’98.
